Why your business needs its own domain name

A domain name is your address on the internet. It is the difference between a clean ".com" and a long link on someone else's platform. Here is why it matters.

1. It looks professional

When a customer sees "jonesplumbing.com" instead of "jonesplumbing.wixsite.com," they trust it more. A real domain says you are a real business, not a side project.

2. You own it

A free website on someone else's platform can disappear if the platform changes its rules or shuts down. A domain you bought is yours. You can point it at any website, move it to a new host, or hand it to someone else to manage.

3. It helps Google find you

Google treats a business with its own domain differently than one on a free subdomain. Your site is more likely to show up in search results, and your Google Business Profile link looks cleaner.

4. It costs less than you think

A .com domain costs about $10 to $20 a year. That is less than a single social media ad. Some registrars mark up the first year and raise the price later, so check the renewal price before you buy.

5. Pick something simple

Use the name people already call you if it is available. Keep it short, easy to spell, and easy to say out loud. Avoid hyphens, numbers and unusual endings. If someone hears it once, they should be able to type it without guessing.

6. Don't let someone else register it for you

Buy the domain in your own account, with your own email and payment. If a web designer or agency registers it under their name, you may have to fight to get it back if you part ways. Your domain, your account.
